Emmett Till: 65 years later
It seems that not much has changed near Money, Mississippi when it comes to Emmett Till. Hate and violence are still the norm. Many people and the State of Mississippi would prefer that the whole affair fade away into history, and they are willing to destroy any memorial or historical record dedicated to young Emmett Till.
A memorial first installed in 2008 to mark the spot where 14-year-old Emmett was recovered from the Tallahatchie River in 1955 has been repeatedly vandalized. First it was stolen and thrown into the river, then the new sign was riddled with bullets. A third sign was shot up again, then removed completely after a photo surfaced of three white University of Mississippi fraternity brothers posing next to it with guns. A fourth sign was erected on October 19, 2019. This one is supposed to be bullet proof. It is made from 1/2” AR500 steel and covered with a 3/4” replaceable polycarbonate plate. Weighing in at nearly 500 lbs., the sign is designed to absorb a rifle round.
Weeks after its installation, a group of white nationalists were caught on camera filming a video in front of the sign, but scattered like the cowards they were when a security system sounded a siren.
Time will tell what other racists will do to desecrate the site and the memory of Emmett Till.
If you think racism in America doesn’t exist, just look at the photo below.
What did this little boy’s death long before these smiling, armed American patriots do, that would cause them to want to harm and destroy his memory?
